VGCCC launches inquiry to modernise and regulate bingo in Victoria
Victorian Gambling Commission Launches Inquiry into Bingo Regulation
The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) has recently announced an inquiry into the regulation of bingo in an effort to create a fairer and more modern gaming environment for players. With bingo generating a substantial revenue of AU$107m ($71m) in FY23 and contributing to charitable causes, the Commission is keen to ensure that the game remains safe and enjoyable for all participants.
Fran Thorn, Chair of the Commission, highlighted the evolution of bingo from traditional paper-based games to electronic versions with larger jackpots. Thorn emphasized the importance of addressing issues such as fairness, integrity, and potential gambling harm, particularly among vulnerable groups like seniors, First Nations communities, women, and lower-income individuals. Despite existing regulations, reports of unlicensed operators and fraudulent activities persist, prompting the need for a thorough evaluation of current regulations.
The inquiry will assess the adequacy of current bingo regulations, examine the risks associated with cash transactions, and ensure that profits from the game benefit community organizations. Commissioner Thorn stressed the importance of understanding how technology is shaping the future of bingo and maintaining its role as a valuable social activity for many.
Interested parties, including customers, industry members, community organizations, and concerned citizens, are encouraged to participate in the inquiry to provide valuable insights and perspectives. In a related development, VGCCC recently fined BlueBet AU$50,000 for violating gambling advertising regulations earlier this year.
